Would you recommend this book to someone, why or why not?
Yes I would recommend this book if you are looking for a light, fluffy beach-style read. How did the author keep you interested throughout the story?
The jumping back and forth of timelines kept me interested. The character development and background stories of their respective childhoods and family home descriptions was interesting. I especially enjoyed the different locations of travelling which kept me living vicariously through the characters, imagining what it would be like to travel to those locations. The scene when Alex and Poppy end up at a hippie gathering in Tofino was quite funny and had me laughing out loud.
How did this book challenge or change your perspective or opinion on something?
I can't think of anything. It was not a controversial book whatsoever.
How does this book compare to other books by the same author or in the same genre?
I read this book for our book club and would not normally read this genre, so I don't have anything to compare it to.
Who was your favourite character and why?
I liked Poppy, the main character. I could relate to her wildness and quirkiness, particularly growing up in an unconventional home with lots of pets, books and general chaos. Her wanderlust to explore the world made her seem like the best friend you want in your life to go travelling with. She's fun, ready to go on adventures and has a good sense of humour.
Who was the character you disagreed with the most, and why?
Alex because he needed to dump his girlfriend who was clearly not right for him, grow a back bone and declare his love for Poppy instead of dragging their friendship out for 12 long years.
How did you feel about the ending? Was it satisfying or did you want more?
To be brutally honest, the ending was quite predictable and I rolled my eyes a few times. While I am sure this type of romantic love does happen to a rare few, I admit I am jaded and this genre of book irritates me because real life doesn't happen in this way. If an opposites attract, romantic, travel adventure novel is what you're looking for in the style of "When Harry Met Sally", then this is the book for you! Otherwise, the "lived happily ever after in sheer bliss" ending will annoy you which is how I felt by the end of this book unfortunately. I did enjoy this book as a nice change from the usual books I read however, the ending not as much.
