All Boys Aren't Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto

 By George M. Johnson

Young Adult Non-Fiction

Reviewed by Gail-Morden Branch Administrator

Let me start by saying that this isn't a book I was drawn to in the normal ways.  I love a good cover, a witty title, a favorite author. This book has none of those things, not for me anyway.

I decided to read (and review) this book simply because of all the drama around it and to learn what is true and what is not, regarding what has all been said about the book.  What can I say, I'm a librarian...I read.

The book cover and title did not draw my attention, but it wasn't really meant to.  George M. Johnson is crystal clear that his audience is young, black men who are questioning their place in this world.  This book is meant to be an education for those who are open to it, and that's where I come in, a middle-aged, white woman who is willing to try to understand someone else's life and experiences a little more.

The author's note at the beginning was good to read for the background of George's story, plus his hopes of what telling his story would accomplish.  It's a true story, it's his life.  There is some tough content to read, it won't be for everyone.

Despite all that, I enjoyed the book.  Well, most of the book.  There were some parts there were hard to read, but I felt that since I had stepped that far into his life already, I owed it to him to read not only the good, but also the bad and the ugly.  There were humorous parts and there were also parts that were interesting, coming from a very different perspective.  The book is largely focused on how things felt to George as he grew up and the internal struggles he went through trying to find out who George M. Johnson was going to be to himself, his family and the world.

Would I recommend it?  I would. It's never a bad thing to open your mind to the experience of someone else.

The Iron Fey Series

The Iron King, The Iron Daughter, The Iron Queen, The Iron Knight

By Julie Kagawa

Young Adult/Fantasy

Reviewed by Kirsty from the Manitou Branch

The author, Julie Kagawa, developed this series originally as a fantasy trilogy.  It is a well-written, imaginative story based, for the most part, in Faerie, that follows the eternal tension between the summer and winter fay, the Seelie and Unseelie courts.  The protagonist is Meghan Chase, a half-human girl.  Meghan goes through a dramatic arc throughout the series so I would encourage any readers to continue reading past the first 100 pages even if you do not like Meghan initially.

"Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan Chase’s life, ever since her father disappeared when she was six. Ten years later, when her little brother also goes missing, Meghan learns the truth—she is the secret daughter of a mythical faery king and a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she loves, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart." (Summary of book 1 from amazon.ca)

The fourth novel was written after Kagawa's original was complete to appease fans of the series.  The trilogy ends without a Happily Ever After (HEA) for the main character and her love interest, Ash, son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court.  The fourth book, The Iron Knight, serves as a creative epilogue to give fans what they demanded (well, most of us anyway): a HEA.  This is a must read for any fans of YA fantasy.

The Apothecary's Garden

By Jeanette Lynes

Adult Fiction

Reviewed by Rebecca from the Manitou Branch

Set in the 1860's this beautiful story enchanted me from the very first pages.  Back in a time when flowers had special meanings, a bouquet could carry a message aside from it's beauty and fragrance.   Lynes writes with an open heart and it was such a joy to read.  I found myself thinking numerous times "What a WONDERFUL sentence!", reading it over a second time to soak it in.  If you are looking for a old fashioned romance, this charming story, peppered with magic, will not disappoint.  I highly recommend!

The Paradox Hotel

By Rob Hart

Adult Fiction

Reviewed by Linda from the Winkler Branch

Welcome to the Paradox Hotel, where the richest of the rich stay before and after their time travel vacations.  The Paradox is January Cole's domain; she's head of security for the hotel.  that means the dead body that appears in on of the rooms, the one that no one else can see, is January's problem.  So is providing security for the ultra-rich, ultra-important people who are competing to buy the the time travel industry from the US Government.  And so are the electrical malfunctions and...dinosaurs?  Those can't be dinosaurs, can they?  But those are work problems.  January has personal problems too.  Her former job exposed her to enough time radiation that she is now seriously in danger of becoming third-level Unstuck, separated from linear time.  It's getting harder and harder to tell if what she's seeing is because she's Unstuck or because something bigger and more sinister is going on.  She's going to hide her condition as long as possible, partly because she feels responsible for the Paradox, but mostly because as long as she's in the hotel (and not quite tethered to time) she can catch glimpses of her beloved Mena.  Mena died in the Paradox, and losing that last connection to her might kill January as well.

The Paradox Hotel is simultaneously science fiction, mystery, and a picture of how grief rips through your life, and somehow manages to do all three of them brilliantly.  Each thread of the plot could stand on its own, but they end up intertwining into the only possible solution, and a truly satisfying ending.  Even if you're only here for the mystery (or sci-fi), the other elements will win you over, as will January herself.

May the 4th Be With You

May the 4th, otherwise known as Star Wars day, has become an unofficial 'holiday' that has gained popularity in recent years.  While the holiday has no official start date, it is thought that the phrase "May the 4th be with you" was first used in 1978.  For more on the history of this day, check out this post on the Star Wars website.  For now, here is a list of some of our Star Wars books for you to check out.  This is by no means a complete list of the books that we have on Star Wars.  My search had 80 pages of results so definitely check out our catalogue for more choices.  As always, click on the book titles to place the books on hold or see your local branch for more information.  And, May the 4th be with you!
