The Red Palace

By June Hur

Young Adult Historical Mystery Fiction

Reviewed by: Joanna - SCRL Cataloguer

In 1758 Joseon (Korea), 18-year-old palace nurse Hyeon works closely with Eojin a  young police inspector, to uncover the truth surrounding the murder of four palace nurses when all the evidence points to the Crown Prince himself.

This is the third book by Korean-Canadian author June Hur and I think it's her best work yet.  Inspired by the true story of Crown Prince Sado, The Red Palace is an atmospheric murder mystery filled with suspense, intrigue and court politics.  Hur's writing style and rich world building had me completely immersed in the story and the characters' lives.  A major theme is the difficulties Hyeon faces as a young woman and illegitimate daughter, due to the strict class system and patriarchal society.  This book also features a slow burn romance that was beautifully written without overpowering the main plot.

I couldn't put this book down and it is now a new favourite of mine!  Highly recommend for fans of murder mysteries, unique historical settings, and slow burn romance.

The Memory Collectors

By Kim Neville

Adult Fiction

Reviewed by Angela-Manitou Branch Administrator

Two very different women have the unique gift of being able to feel emotions that have been left on objects by their previous owners.  Harriet sees this ability as a gift, while Ev thinks it a curse, and with good reason as we'll see as the story unfolds.  They each thought they were the only ones who had this ability, so when they meet, they are distrustful of each other.  However, they enter into an uneasy working relationship when Ev agrees to help Harriet sort the thousands of 'treasures' she has hoarded for years.  Her idea is to open a museum so people can feel the love in the cherished objects she has collected.  But Ev soon realizes that not all of Harriet's treasures are benign.  Doubting Harriet's motives, and feeling Harriet has not told her the whole story of her life, Ev starts delving into Harriet's world to find the truth, at great danger to herself.

The author skillfully intertwines the back stories of these two women with lots of excitement, surprises, twists and turns, with a healthy dose of magic thrown in for good measure.  I guarantee you won't guess the ending!

Unbroken

 By Laura Hillenbrand

Adult Non Fiction

Reviewed by Michelle from the Altona Branch

Unbroken is the true, traumatic and riveting story of Olympian and U.S. Air Force lieutenant Louis Zamperini.  As an Olympic long distance runner, Louis knew the power of endurance and strength.  Louis enlisted in the U.S. Air Force to help with the WW II effort.  While on a mission, his plane was shot down over the ocean and he miraculously survived 47 harrowing days at sea.  He was discovered by the Japanese and was placed in a Japanese P.O.W. camp. He stayed here for over two years, and was the subject of torture and hard labor.

Drawn to stories of human endurance, Unbroken just keeps giving.  Some parts are so unbelievable you feel what he's gone through in your very being.

Vacancy

 By K. R. Alexander

Junior Fiction

Reviewed by Briana, age 10

This book begins by introducing a girl named Jasmine, a new student in a town called Gold River.  Gold River is known for "Carlisle Hotel", a creepy abandoned hotel that Jasmine finds herself being pulled towards.  The hotel appears in her nightmares and calls to her during the day.

It is a local tradition in Gold River for middle school kids to try and stay in the hotel for a night without being scared away.  So far, no one has been able to do it.  Jasmine and her new friends decide to spend the night because really, how hard could it be?  But, there's one thing Jasmine and her friends don't know about...the building is not abandoned; it has plenty of people...dead ones.

I liked that Jasmine was so good at hiding that she was evil.  The reader always assumes the protagonist is the good guy and it was interesting to read a story where this was not the case.,  I really liked the book, but I think it could have been a bit scarier.  The ending was a surprise, but it felt rushed, like they were trying to wrap things up too quickly.

Yikes! What am I talking about?!

No, I am not saying that we're getting our clothes on, or that we are feeling shaky.  Rather, these are recipe names in a fun cookbook called Looneyspoons, written by Canadian sisters Janet and Greta Podleski. But this is more than just your average cookbook.

When you open this cookbook, some of the first things you will notice are the layout, which includes one recipe per page, and the fun cartoon drawings. Other features included in this book are tidbits of trivia, health facts and even some jokes.  I have enjoyed reading this cookbook for pleasure and I have had fun trying out some of the delicious low-fat recipes.

Read it for pleasure, read it for good recipes.  It's up to you.
