This Dark Endeavor

By Kenneth Oppel

 Young Adult Fiction

Reviewed by Cathy-SCRL Director

This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel is the first book in The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein series.  Twin  brothers, Victor and Konrad are inseparable growing up.  Although they are identical in looks, they are not identical in nature.  When a strange illness threatens Konrad's life, Victor, his friend Henry and beautiful cousin Elizabeth, enter the forbidden Dark Library to find books on alchemy to try to save Konrad's life.  This book is about trust, betrayal, love, jealousy and treachery.  And horror...after all, it is about the Frankenstein family!

I love the retelling of classic stories with a modern twist.  This Dark Endeavor captures the imagination of what else might be found by the young Frankenstein in that Dark Library.

Available as an audiobook playaway from the Winkler branch.
