Thanksgiving--Hanukkah--Christmas--New Year's Eve. These are the celebrations of Dakota Walker's twentieth winter. And like every year she can remember, she is celebrating them with the ladies of the Friday Night Knitting Club. The Friday Night Knitting Club began in Walker and Daughter, the yarn shop Dakota's mother Georgia started and ran until her death when Dakota was a young teen. But this year is full of challenges and changes. For one thing, Dakota has lined up a pastry-chef internship with a high-end hotel over Christmas, but her dad has made other plans. Peri, who is managing Walker and Daughter until Dakota can take over, is considering a very different job offer. Anita is planning a wedding and Catherine is trying to figure out what she wants out of her relationship. All these changes are pulling Dakota in different directions, and the stress is getting to her. Somehow, she'll need to figure out what's really important.
Knit the Season is the third Friday Night Knitting Club novel. Like the other books in the series, it depicts the different stages in the lives of women, who have all made different choices about relationships, with warmth and love. There are moments of joy and sadness, a proposal or two, plenty of tense and awkward moments, and a few reconciliations along the way. Be warned: I cried at least once reading this book. I would definitely recommend reading the original Friday Night Knitting Club books before reading Knit the Season though, as there are a lot of storylines and people to keep straight, and I found myself drawing on what I remembered from the first book to help me keep track of who's who.
If you're looking for fluffy and uncomplicated holiday reading, this wouldn't be my first choice, but if you want a story you can engage in, Knit the Season just might be the holiday book for you.
