"But if you are one of those people who believe that some things are impossible, you should put this book down right away.  It is most certainly not for you.  Because this book is full of impossible things....Are you still reading the book? Good. (Elves would be proud.)  Then let us begin..."

So begins the tale of Nikolas, an ordinary boy, living in the middle of Finland with his father, Joel the woodcutter, in a small one room cottage.  As a poor boy with only a turnip doll and a mouse named Miika for companions, Nikolas (who is sometimes called Christmas because he was born on Christmas day) loves to hear the stores of the elves of the Far North who live in the city of Elfhelm. When Nikolas' father is invited on a quest to find the city of Elfhelm, Nikolas is left with his mean Aunt Carlotta, who makes life even worse for Nikolas.  When his father doesn't return when he says he will, Nikolas decides to go after him.  This leads Nikolas on an adventure far beyond what he could have ever imagined, allowing him to make new friends and ultimately, discover who he was meant to be.

A Boy Called Christmas tells "the true story of Father Christmas" and had me captivated from the very first page.  After watching the movie adaptation on Netflix, I knew I had to read this book and it definitely did not disappoint.  At times funny, heartwarming and sad, A Boy Called Christmas is the perfect novel to read together as a family during the Christmas season.

"An impossibility is just a possibility you don't understand"
