Drowning Ruth

 By Christina Schwarz

Adult Fiction

From the very first page of this book, the reader is left with more questions than answers!  The author, Christina Schwarz, does a clever job of enticing one with little tidbits while never completely giving anything away.  This encourages the reader to speculate until almost the last moment.

Drowning Ruth is the story of two sisters, Amanda and Mathilda, who have a very complex relationship.  The sisters choose to live together alone on a deserted island but there are many in their community who cannot understand why they would move to the island when they have already inherited a well established farmyard and home.  What secret are they keeping between them?  What happens that cold, icy night of November 27, 1919?

When Mathilda's husband Carl returns from war shortly after, he is left to sort out and try and understand much of the secrecy, all while raising his daughter Ruth.
