Two young boys, one from rural Utah, the other from the Hitler Youth Party, want to prove themselves as men during a time of war. This story tells how each boy believes he can make a difference for his country by fighting for 'the cause'. Told in alternating chapters, Spencer and Dieter's beliefs, trials and realizations about how life in training and the terror on the battlefields of France are so different from what they had been led to believe.
Every story has two sides and hearing how both young men grew up with the same hopes, dreams and fears puts into perspective the real casualty of war. Young men were called to serve their countries without ever really knowing the perils they would experience. I felt empathy for both Spencer and Dieter as they grew up too fast, believing they were doing what was right and thinking that they were invincible because they were young.Soldier Boys is currently available in Playaway format and soon in paperback in Morden & Winkler Branches.
