The author, Julie Kagawa, developed this series originally as a fantasy trilogy. It is a well-written, imaginative story based, for the most part, in Faerie, that follows the eternal tension between the summer and winter fay, the Seelie and Unseelie courts. The protagonist is Meghan Chase, a half-human girl. Meghan goes through a dramatic arc throughout the series so I would encourage any readers to continue reading past the first 100 pages even if you do not like Meghan initially."Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan Chase’s life, ever since her father disappeared when she was six. Ten years later, when her little brother also goes missing, Meghan learns the truth—she is the secret daughter of a mythical faery king and a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she loves, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart." The fourth novel was written after Kagawa's original was complete to appease fans of the series. The trilogy ends without a Happily Ever After (HEA) for the main character and her love interest, Ash, son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. The fourth book, The Iron Knight, serves as a creative epilogue to give fans what they demanded (well, most of us anyway): a HEA. This is a must read for any fans of YA fantasy.
